How to run it
Pair the student with a peer or play the partner yourself. Read the card aloud in Spanish, agree the count, and keep the tally where both can see it. The early cards — hablen del recreo, habla de algo que te encanta — practise staying; the later ones practise noticing, such as when the partner changes the topic on purpose and the student has to say so and bring it back. «Cuéntale un problema a tu compañero» reverses the job, so the student judges someone else. Fifteen minutes covers three or four cards with the count reviewed after each.
Cueing ladder
Start at the top. Add support one step at a time.
- IndependentSet up the situation and wait for the student to respond on their own.Log as correct
- Nonverbal cueUse a look, a gesture or a point to the visual cue card.Log as cued
- Indirect promptAsk 'What could you say now?' or 'How do you think they feel?'Log as cued
- ModelShow what to say or do, then run the moment again so the student can try it.Log as cued
Adjust it
Give a script or two choices of what to say, and practise with you before a peer.
Role-play with a new partner, or add a twist the student has not planned for.
Matching IEP goal
In structured role-plays, Student will use the target conversation skill appropriately in 4 of 5 opportunities across 3 consecutive sessions, given no more than a nonverbal cue.
Send it home through the parent portal →About this activity
Ten Spanish-language conversation tasks with counted turns and a different rule on each card: «Quédate en ese tema durante cuatro turnos»; «En cada turno tienes que aportar algo nuevo, no repetir»; «Solo se puede cambiar de tema si antes dices una frase puente»; «Tu compañero va a cambiar de tema sin avisar». Counting turns makes staying on topic something you can measure in the session instead of an impression at the end of it.
What to listen for
Listen for turns that repeat instead of add; the recreo card makes that visible. On «Tu compañero empieza un tema que te aburre», watch whether the question at the end is a real question or a way out. On the bridge-phrase card, notice whether the student says the frase puente or just switches. Students who cut off on time with «Corta después de cuatro turnos» are showing a different skill from staying on topic, and it is worth scoring separately.
Carrying it home
Families can play the four-turn game at dinner in Spanish or English: pick a topic, count turns out loud, and whoever changes the subject first explains how they would have bridged. Keep it light — the counting is the fun part.
What's in this activity
