Free speech therapy memory games

In a memory game the cards start face down. The student turns two over, names both, and keeps them if they match. Every turn produces two spoken words, which builds a lot of practice into a short game.
Most of the memory boards here are minimal pairs for phonological processes (final consonant deletion, stopping, gliding, cluster reduction and voicing), so every turn asks the child to say and hear the contrast. The animal babies board is a vocabulary set for younger students.

Questions
- How many trials does a memory game give me?
- Each turn is two productions, and missed pairs come back around, so even a small board gives more trials than it has cards. Mark the target words as the child names them.
- Is memory too hard for preschoolers?
- Play it cooperatively: you and the child look for the pairs together, so the memory load does not get in the way of the speech target. Most of these boards are written for preschool to second grade.
- Why use minimal pairs in a memory game?
- Because the child has to say each word clearly enough for you to know which card it is. If “boat” comes out as “bow”, you both hear that it is not a match, which is the point of minimal pairs.
