How to run it

Read the card aloud in Spanish and ask for the full answer before offering anything. Several cards set a number or a structure — «Da tres explicaciones que no tengan que ver contigo», ordering possible reasons from most to least likely — so hold the student to it. On «Alguien leyó tu mensaje como si fuera borde», have them actually reread the message in the other person's voice. Follow each answer with one question: what would you do differently now. Twenty minutes covers four or five cards with discussion.

Cueing ladder

Start at the top. Add support one step at a time.

  1. Step 1IndependentSet up the situation and wait for the student to respond on their own.Log as correct
  2. Step 2Nonverbal cueUse a look, a gesture or a point to the visual cue card.Log as cued
  3. Step 3Indirect promptAsk 'What could you say now?' or 'How do you think they feel?'Log as cued
  4. Step 4ModelShow what to say or do, then run the moment again so the student can try it.Log as cued

Adjust it

Easier

Give a script or two choices of what to say, and practise with you before a peer.

Harder

Role-play with a new partner, or add a twist the student has not planned for.

Matching IEP goal

Given social scenarios, Student will identify another person's thoughts or feelings and give a reason in 8 of 10 opportunities across 3 consecutive sessions, given no more than an indirect prompt.

About this activity

Ten ambiguous social situations, in Spanish, to explain from the other person's point of view: «Saludaste a alguien y no te devolvió el saludo»; «Contaste un chiste y nadie se rió»; «Hay un alumno nuevo comiendo solo»; «Te dejaron fuera de un grupo de mensajes». The student generates the explanation themselves rather than choosing from options, which is where perspective-taking actually gets hard.

What to listen for

Listen for explanations that keep coming back to the student — he ignored me because he does not like me — when the card asks for reasons that have nothing to do with them. On the joke card, notice whether the student can separate what they meant from what the class heard. On «En casa te dijeron que no», watch for the idea that adults might know something the student does not; students who can say that are making the shift the card is built for.

Carrying it home

When something puzzling happens with a friend, ask in Spanish or English what it might have looked like from the friend's side, and wait for two ideas before offering yours.

What's in this activity

  • Saludaste a alguien y no te devolvió el saludo.
