/n/ is a nasal sound made with the tongue tip up behind the top teeth, the same place as /t/ and /d/, while the voice comes out through the nose. It can be held (“nnn”), which makes it a useful starting point for tongue-tip placement.
The boards cover /n/ at the start and end of words, in phrases and in sentences. The /t/ /d/ /n/ cards practice all three tongue-tip sounds, which helps when a student mixes them up or when /n/ is the easiest of the three to start from.

Questions
- What cue helps with /n/?
- Have the student put the tongue tip on the bump behind the top teeth and hum. Touching the side of the nose lets them feel the vibration, which is what separates /n/ from /d/.
- Why are /t/, /d/ and /n/ practiced together?
- They share a place, the tongue tip on the ridge behind the teeth, and differ only in voicing and nasality. Practicing them together lets one placement cue do the work for all three.
- Does final /n/ need its own practice?
- If a student leaves off final sounds, or lets /n/ fade into the vowel, yes. The final flashcards and phrases give you words where the tongue has to finish up behind the teeth.
