About this activity
Twelve Spanish core words for the requests that fill a day: quiero, más, ya (terminé), ayuda, no, sí, mira, dame, otra vez, mi turno, abre, vamos. Core vocabulary is small and high-frequency by design, and these twelve cover most of what a young AAC user needs to say before any topic-specific vocabulary is added.
How to use it in a session
Model in Spanish, in the situations where the words belong. Más at snack, otra vez during a game, abre at a door — the word attached to the moment is learned far faster than the word on a card. Mira is the one to model deliberately, because it is a comment rather than a request and most core boards get used entirely for getting things. Ten minutes on the board, then a session of modelling.
What to listen for
Watch the balance between requests and comments. A student whose use is all quiero, más and dame has a functional system and a narrow one, and mira produced spontaneously is a real milestone. Notice no and sí, which are the most powerful words here and the ones adults are most likely to override.
Carrying it home
In a Spanish-speaking home the modelling is free and constant. Hitting the symbol while saying the word, during things that were happening anyway, is the whole method.
