Fourteen long Spanish words shown split into syllables: ma-ri-po-sa, bi-ci-cle-ta, e-le-fan-te, re-fri-ge-ra-dor, com-pu-ta-do-ra, hos-pi-tal, te-lé-fo-no, ma-te-má-ti-cas, he-la-de-rí-a. Spanish syllable structure is regular in a way English is not, which makes multisyllabic work more predictable and no less necessary.
How to use it in a session
Say it syllable by syllable, then rebuild at speed. The split is already supplied, which lets the student concentrate on producing all the syllables rather than on finding the divisions. Clapping each syllable helps a child who is dropping one — and dropping a syllable is the characteristic error here, not distorting a sound. Ten minutes covers a subset properly; fourteen long words in one session is too many.
What to listen for
Listen for weak syllable deletion. Refrigerador becoming refrigador is a whole syllable lost, and it is a different problem from a sound produced incorrectly. Watch the stress: Spanish marks it with an accent in matemáticas, teléfono and película, and a student who moves the stress changes how the word sounds even when every syllable is present.
Carrying it home
These are ordinary household words — bicicleta, ventana, cuaderno, zanahoria. Asking for one careful production of one word beats a list, because a long word carries more practice than a short one.
