How to run it
Say the syllables aloud with an even pause between them, about one per second, and let the student say the whole word before looking at the choices. If they struggle, shorten the pauses. Then reverse it: you say pelota and the student splits it into syllables. Blending and segmenting together make each other stronger.
Cueing ladder
Start at the top. Add support one step at a time.
- IndependentAn adult reads every card and choice aloud. Say the syllables with an even one-second pause and wait 5 seconds for the student to say the whole word.Log as correct
- Shorter pausesSay the syllables again with shorter pauses between them, closer to the whole word.Log as cued
- Two choicesOffer two words, the right one not always second, and let the student pick the one the syllables make.Log as cued
- ModelSay the syllables and then the word, tapping once per syllable; the student says it after you.Log as cued
Adjust it
Start with two-syllable words like glo-bo and casa before three and four syllables.
Take the choices away, or move on to segmenting: you say the word and the student splits it into syllables.
Matching IEP goal
Given words of two to four syllables spoken one syllable at a time in Spanish, such as 'pe - lo - ta', Student will blend the syllables and say the word in 8 of 10 opportunities across 3 consecutive sessions, given no more than one repetition.
Send it home through the parent portal →About this activity
Eight Spanish words said one syllable at a time: pe-lo-ta, za-pa-to, ven-ta-na, ca-ra-col, glo-bo, plá-ta-no, bi-ci-cle-ta and ma-ri-po-sa. The student blends the syllables and chooses the word they make. The other choices share sounds with the answer, like paleta beside pelota, so the student has to listen to every syllable, not just the first one.
What to listen for
Notice whether the student blends all the syllables or only the first ones; choosing pelo for pe-lo-ta is a sign of stopping early. Listen for words with clusters, glo-bo and plá-ta-no, where the two consonants stay together in one syllable. Notice whether the student can blend without the written choices, which is the skill the board is building.
Carrying it home
At home, families can play robot talk in Spanish: say a word slowly in syllables, ca-mi-sa, and the child guesses the word. Then switch roles. Use names, foods and toys. It takes a minute in the car or at dinner and is a strong early reading skill in Spanish.
