¿Empieza igual? El primer sonido de la palabra
Nueve palabras modelo. El estudiante escucha el primer sonido y elige la palabra que empieza con el mismo sonido. Un adulto lee en voz alta cada tarjeta y cada opción.

How to run it
Say the model word and the three choices aloud, stretching or repeating the first sound: sss-sol. Let the student answer by ear before looking at the written words. For casa and queso, talk about how they sound the same at the start even though they look different; the board is about sounds, not letters. Then ask for another word that starts the same way.
Cueing ladder
Start at the top. Add support one step at a time.
- IndependentAn adult reads every card and choice aloud. Say the item and wait 5 seconds for the student's answer.Log as correct
- Stretch itSay the word again slowly, stretching the sounds or tapping the syllables.Log as cued
- Two choicesOffer two answers, the right one not always second.Log as cued
- ModelDo it yourself, tapping as you go, then the student does it after you.Log as cued
Adjust it
Use pictures, fewer items, and words with fewer sounds.
Take the pictures away, or move on to blending three sounds into a word.
Matching IEP goal
Given spoken words, Student will identify the first or last sound in a word in 8 of 10 opportunities across 3 consecutive sessions, given no more than one repetition.
Send it home through the parent portal →About this activity
Nine Spanish model words, sol, mano, pato, casa, gato, luna, foca, dedo and nube, each with three choices. The student listens for the first sound and picks the word that starts the same way. Some items listen past spelling on purpose: casa and queso start with the same sound even though one is written with c and one with qu, while cereza, also written with c, starts with a different sound.
What to listen for
Notice whether the student listens to sound or looks at letters; picking cereza for casa because of the c shows the student is reading, not listening. Listen for close pairs like gato and goma beside jirafa, and dedo and dado beside tapa, which test fine sound distinctions. Notice whether the student can produce a new word with the same first sound.
Carrying it home
At home, families can play veo veo in Spanish with sounds: veo algo que empieza con mmm, and the child guesses mesa or mamá. Take turns. Use real objects around the house, and stretch the first sound so it is easy to hear. Short, playful rounds work better than long ones.

Questions
- Who is this for?
- Spanish-speaking and bilingual children in kindergarten and first grade working on initial sound identification (sonido inicial) in Spanish.
- Why do casa and queso count as the same first sound?
- Because they sound the same at the start. Phonological awareness is about what we hear, so the board follows Spanish sounds rather than letters, and the answers were checked against a table of first sounds, not spellings.
- Can I change the items?
- Yes. Open it in the Activity Studio, edit or add items and keep the same board, or switch it to another template that fits the content.
- Is it free?
- Yes. It plays free in the browser with no login. An account adds session data, goal scoring and assignment to a student.
