How to run it

Say the word, segment it, then build. Zip, zap, zen and zest are entirely regular; zoo, zoom, zero and zone have vowel spellings worth attending to separately. Point out that /z/ at the start of a word is always the letter z — one of the few completely reliable statements available about English spelling, and worth saying because so few others are.

Cueing ladder

Start at the top. Add support one step at a time.

  1. Step 1IndependentAfter building each word, the student says it aloud. Wait 3 seconds.Log as correct
  2. Step 2Visual cuePoint to your mouth, or show the mouth picture for /z/, before the student tries again.Log as cued
  3. Step 3Verbal modelSay the word; the student says it right after you.Log as cued
  4. Step 4Placement cueSame shape as /s/: teeth close, tongue tip just behind the top teeth, air down the middle. Now turn your voice on so it buzzes like a bee.Log as cued

Adjust it

Easier

Drop to syllables ('za' and 'zee'), or use fewer cards.

Harder

Put each word in a short carrier phrase with no /z/ in it or mix in /z/ words from another position.

Matching IEP goal

Given word cards, Student will produce /z/ in the word-initial position in single words in 8 of 10 opportunities across 3 consecutive sessions, given no more than a visual cue.

About this activity

The ten initial /z/ words — zip, zoo, zero, zone, zoom, zinc, zeal, zap, zen, zest — as a spelling task. Derived from the flashcard deck. The first letter is never in doubt, since word-initial /z/ is always written z, which makes this a rare case where the target sound has exactly one spelling.

What to listen for

Watch the vowels rather than the target letter. Zoo and zoom share a vowel team, zone uses a silent e, and zero has an unusual spelling for its second syllable. Notice whether the production holds while the letters are placed, which is the divided-attention check the spelling version is good for.

Carrying it home

Spelling zip or zoo aloud takes seconds. Both are short, both are familiar, and both put the target sound at the start where it is easiest to attend to.

Questions

How is this different from the flashcards?
Same ten words, built from letters. The initial z is never the spelling problem; the vowels are.
Do I need to sign in?
No, it plays free with no account.
Is /z/ always spelled with a z?
At the start of a word, yes — which is unusually reliable for English. At the end it is often an s, as in eyes and keys.
