How to run it

Say the word, name the two consonants, then build. Keep the attention on the first two letters, since the rest of these words is regular and predictable. Frío and dromedario carry accents or extra length that will distract; do the short frequent words — tren, cruz, grande — first, since those are the ones the student writes most.

Cueing ladder

Start at the top. Add support one step at a time.

  1. Step 1IndependentAfter building each word, the student says it aloud. Wait 3 seconds.Log as correct
  2. Step 2Visual cuePoint to your mouth, or show the mouth picture for /r/ clusters, before the student tries again.Log as cued
  3. Step 3Verbal modelSay the word; the student says it right after you.Log as cued
  4. Step 4Placement cueSay the first consonant, then one quick tap of the tongue tip with no vowel between: 'bra', not 'bara'.Log as cued

Adjust it

Easier

Split the cluster with a short pause ('b… ra'), then close the gap until it is one sound.

Harder

Put each word in a short carrier phrase with no /r/ in it.

Matching IEP goal

Given word cards, Student will produce /r/ clusters in Spanish in single words in 8 of 10 opportunities across 3 consecutive sessions, given no more than a visual cue.

About this activity

The fourteen /r/ cluster words — brazo, brincar, cruz, crema, dragón, dromedario, fresa, frío, grande, gracias, primo, precio, tren, trabajo — as a spelling task. Derived from the flashcard deck. Because Spanish spelling follows the sound closely, a dropped r in speech usually shows up as a dropped r on paper.

What to listen for

Watch for the r missing in writing. Gande for grande is the written version of the spoken reduction, and showing the child both together makes the pattern visible. Notice frío, where the accent marks a broken diphthong — a spelling matter separate from the cluster and worth naming so it does not confuse the target.

Carrying it home

Ask which two letters start tren. It is a five-second question with an obvious answer, and asking it across three or four cluster words is what makes the pattern.

Questions

Is this the same as the flashcards?
Same fourteen words, built from letters. It shows whether the cluster is missing in writing as well as in speech.
Is it free?
Yes, no account needed.
Why does 'frío' have an accent?
It marks a broken diphthong — the i is its own syllable rather than part of one with the o. It is a spelling matter separate from the cluster target.
