How to run it
Say the word, have the student repeat it and tap the sounds, then build it on the board. After spelling, read the word aloud together. If they struggle, give the first letter only, not the whole word. Do the three-letter words first, then hand and plant in the same session so the vowel stays short a throughout.
Cueing ladder
Start at the top. Add support one step at a time.
- IndependentShow the card and wait 3 seconds for the student to read it.Log as correct
- Point to itPoint to the letter pattern that matters, or tap under each sound.Log as cued
- Sound it outSay the first sound together, then let the student blend the rest.Log as cued
- ModelRead it, tapping each sound; the student reads it after you.Log as cued
Adjust it
Use fewer cards and start with the patterns the student already reads, such as 'cat' and 'map'.
Read the words in a sentence, or spell them from dictation.
Matching IEP goal
Given decodable word cards, such as 'cat' and 'map', Student will read the target pattern accurately in 8 of 10 words across 3 consecutive sessions, given no more than a visual cue.
Send it home through the parent portal →About this activity
Eight words with the short a sound: cat, map, bag, fan, jam, pan, hand and plant. Each word is built letter by letter on the board, so a student who writes cat as ct finds out immediately while the target is still visible. Hand and plant stretch the pattern to four and five letters, which is a natural step after three-letter CVC practice.
What to listen for
Listen for whether the student hears three sounds in cat or skips the middle vowel. Watch for b and d reversals in bag and jam. Plant often becomes pant when the student rushes the blend at the end. Notice whether errors happen in spelling only or also when they read the word back.
Carrying it home
Pick one word from the board and hunt for it in a book or on a cereal box. Spell it with magnetic letters on the fridge. Change one letter to make a new short a word: map to cap, cat to bat. Two or three words a night is enough.

Questions
- Who is this for?
- Kindergarten through second grade students learning short vowel spelling, especially short a in CVC and slightly longer words.
- Is it free?
- Yes. It plays free in the browser with no login. An account adds session data, goal scoring and assignment to a student.
- Why include plant with CVC words?
- Many first grade lists move from cat to hand and plant in the same week. It keeps the short a sound while the spelling length grows.
