How to run it
Say the word, then ask the student to say it and clap the sounds. Have them place the final blend letters as a pair before filling the start. Read the finished word aloud. Group nd words together in the first pass if blends are new, then mix all eight.
Cueing ladder
Start at the top. Add support one step at a time.

Adjust it
Use fewer cards and start with the patterns the student already reads, such as 'hand' and 'jump'.
Read the words in a sentence, or spell them from dictation.
Matching IEP goal
Given decodable word cards, such as 'hand' and 'jump', Student will read the target pattern accurately in 8 of 10 words across 3 consecutive sessions, given no more than a visual cue.
Send it home through the parent portal →About this activity
Eight words ending in final consonant blends: hand and band with nd, jump and sink with nk, tent and mint with nt, and nest and fast with st. Letters arrive scrambled so the student must hold the whole blend together at the end of the word. That matches the listening error many early readers make, stopping at the vowel and leaving off the last consonants.
What to listen for
Watch for words finished without the final consonant, hand spelled han, or only one letter of the blend. Notice whether nk and nt get swapped in jump versus tent. A student who builds nest quickly but struggles with mint may be reading the first letters and guessing.
Carrying it home
Write one word from the board, cut the letters apart, and rebuild it together. Say a pair of rhyming words: hand and band, nest and fast. Hunt for final blends on street signs or food labels for one minute.
