How to run it

Say the word as the student picks up each card, then have them say it before dropping it on the picture. For a nonreader, you name the word and they find the picture; for a reader, let them read and check aloud. Ask one short question per item: what do we wear when it rains, or when do we see a rainbow. Five minutes is enough for all eight.

Cueing ladder

Start at the top. Add support one step at a time.

  1. Step 1IndependentPresent the item and wait 5 seconds of quiet before helping.Log as correct
  2. Step 2HintGive a clue about the word's category, what it does, or where you find it.Log as cued
  3. Step 3Two choicesOffer two answers, the right one not always second.Log as cued
  4. Step 4ModelGive the answer in a sentence; the student says it back and uses it once more.Log as cued

Adjust it

Easier

Use fewer items and start with the ones the student already knows, such as 'sun' and 'rain'.

Harder

Ask for the word in a sentence of the student's own, or a second example from the same group.

Matching IEP goal

Given vocabulary cards, Student will name, sort or define target words in 8 of 10 opportunities across 3 consecutive sessions, given no more than an indirect cue.

About this activity

Eight weather words, sun, rain, cloud, snow, wind, storm, rainbow and lightning, each dragged onto its picture. Weather shows up in morning meetings, science units and small talk, so these words get used in more than one context. The board checks whether a student links the spoken word to what the sky or season looks like, not only whether they can repeat the label.

What to listen for

Watch confusions between cloud and storm, or rain and snow, which differ in intensity more than in category. Notice whether the student says the word or only moves the card. A child who places lightning correctly but cannot name it when you point is recognizing the picture, not yet producing the word.

Carrying it home

Name the weather at the window each morning using one word from the board. Let the child draw today's weather and label it. After a storm, talk about rain, wind and lightning in order. One real observation beats repeating the whole list at the table.

Questions

Who is this for?
PreK through second grade students building weather vocabulary, and older students with limited vocabulary who need concrete science words.
Is it free?
Yes. It plays free in the browser with no login. An account adds session data, goal scoring and assignment to a student.
Can I use my own word list?
Yes. In Activity Studio, type your words once and play them as picture cards, a wheel, speaking cards or spelling.
