How to run it
Group by team and build several in a row. Four ai words together establish the spelling in a way a mixed list cannot, since the student has to remember which team rather than work it out. Be explicit that the sound does not tell them the spelling — that honesty saves a lot of fruitless listening and points them at memorisation, which is the actual strategy.
Cueing ladder
Start at the top. Add support one step at a time.
- IndependentShow the card and wait 3 seconds for the student to read it.Log as correct
- Point to itPoint to the letter pattern that matters, or tap under each sound.Log as cued
- Sound it outSay the first sound together, then let the student blend the rest.Log as cued
- ModelRead it, tapping each sound; the student reads it after you.Log as cued
Adjust it
Use fewer cards and start with the patterns the student already reads, such as 'rain' and 'train'.
Read the words in a sentence, or spell them from dictation.
Matching IEP goal
Given decodable word cards, such as 'rain' and 'train', Student will read the target pattern accurately in 8 of 10 words across 3 consecutive sessions, given no more than a visual cue.
Send it home through the parent portal →About this activity
The sixteen vowel team words — rain, train, paint, mail, tree, feet, green, sleep, boat, coat, road, soap, blue, glue, true, clue — as a spelling task. Derived from the flashcard deck, and this is where vowel teams become genuinely hard: the sound gives no clue which team spells it, since ai and a-consonant-e both say the same thing.
What to listen for
Watch for the wrong team spelling the right sound. Rane for rain and bote for boat are phonetically excellent and orthographically wrong, and they show the student has the sound and not the word. Notice that ue words are few — blue, glue, true, clue — which makes them easier to memorise as a small set.
Carrying it home
Ask which two letters spell the vowel in a word rather than for the whole word. Rain or boat — the answer has to be remembered, and asking is what builds the memory.

Questions
- How does this differ from the flashcards?
- Same sixteen words, built from letters. Spelling is where vowel teams get hard, because the sound gives no clue which team to use.
- Do I need to sign in?
- No, it plays free with no account.
- How do students know which vowel team to write?
- Mostly they cannot work it out — several teams spell the same sound. These are learned word by word, which is worth saying so students stop looking for a rule that is not there.
