Session summary (SOAP)

Mark a card Correct, Correct with cue or Incorrect and the summary writes itself here.

How to run it

Ask for the word and the team before each move — rain, a-i. Because the rounds mix teams rather than grouping them, this works better as a check on a pattern already learned than as the place to learn it; use the flashcard deck first. The third round is only two words and works as a warm-down.

Cueing ladder

Start at the top. Add support one step at a time.

  1. Step 1IndependentShow the card and wait 3 seconds for the student to read it.Log as correct
  2. Step 2Point to itPoint to the letter pattern that matters, or tap under each sound.Log as cued
  3. Step 3Sound it outSay the first sound together, then let the student blend the rest.Log as cued
  4. Step 4ModelRead it, tapping each sound; the student reads it after you.Log as cued

Adjust it

Easier

Use fewer cards and start with the patterns the student already reads, such as 'rain' and 'train'.

Harder

Read the words in a sentence, or spell them from dictation.

Matching IEP goal

Given decodable word cards, such as 'rain' and 'train', Student will read the target pattern accurately in 8 of 10 words across 3 consecutive sessions, given no more than a visual cue.

About this activity

Three drag-and-drop rounds from the vowel team deck: rain, train, paint, tree and feet in the first; green, boat, coat, road and soap in the second; blue and glue in the third. Twelve of the sixteen words, split into short rounds, which makes it a set of quick checks rather than one long sort.

What to listen for

Watch the mixed rounds, where a student who has learned each team in isolation has to choose between them. That choosing is the harder skill and it is where a pattern learned by position rather than by sound will fail. Notice road and boat together, which share a team and a rhyme and can be placed correctly by shape alone.

Carrying it home

Sorting a handful of written words by their vowel pattern is a two-minute task on paper, and any early reader supplies the words. Rain, tree, boat and blue between them cover all four teams and turn up constantly.

Questions

How is this different from the flashcards?
Twelve of the sixteen words, mixed rather than grouped, and placed rather than read. It works as a check on a pattern already taught.
Is it free?
Yes, all three rounds play with no account.
Which should I use first?
The flashcard deck, which groups the words by team so the pattern is visible. Use this afterwards, where the mixing makes it a real test.
