Listening Comprehension: Two-Step Directions
Eight short spoken directions with two steps each. The student hears the direction with the words hidden and chooses what to do first or what to do next.
This device has no voice — read the passage aloud to the student.
Push in your chair, then line up at the door.

How to run it
Press Listen on each item so the student hears the full direction before reading the choices. For the first few items, act the steps out after the answer so the order is physical, not only verbal. If the student misses the second-step question, replay the passage and ask them to put up one finger for the first step and two for the second while they listen. Keep the room quiet; this board tests listening, not reading the choices.
Cueing ladder
Start at the top. Add support one step at a time.
- IndependentPress Listen so the student hears the passage with the words hidden; play it again before giving any other help, and show the words only as a later support. Present the item and wait 5 seconds of quiet before helping.Log as correct
- RepeatRepeat the direction once, at the same speed, stressing the key words.Log as cued
- Chunk itBreak the direction into its steps and give them one at a time.Log as cued
- ModelShow the steps yourself, then the student does them.Log as cued
Adjust it
Give one step at a time, with a picture or a written list for each step.
Add a step, or a concept word such as 'before', 'after' or 'except'.
Matching IEP goal
Given spoken or written directions, Student will complete every step of the direction in order in 8 of 10 opportunities across 3 consecutive sessions, given no more than one repetition.
Send it home through the parent portal →About this activity
Eight two-step directions heard aloud with the words hidden: push in your chair then line up at the door, get a pencil and turn to page ten, put your lunchbox on the shelf then hang up your backpack, and touch your nose then clap two times. Each direction is split into two questions about order, so the student has to hold both steps in mind while listening. It is built for kindergarten through third grade students who follow single steps but lose the sequence when a second step is added.
What to listen for
Notice whether errors are on first step or second step questions. A student who always picks the last thing they heard may be recalling the end of the sentence, not the order. Watch whether they need the words shown; if they do, note it as a support level rather than a failure. Pair this board with real classroom routines so the vocabulary (lunchbox, backpack, page ten) matches words they already use at school.
Carrying it home
Give real two-step directions during daily routines: put your plate in the sink, then wash your hands. Ask the child to repeat both steps before moving. Play Simon Says with two-part rules: Simon says touch your toes and then jump once. Praise when they wait for the full direction before acting.

Questions
- Who is this for?
- Kindergarten through third grade students working on listening to and carrying out two-step directions in classroom language.
- Why are the words hidden?
- So the task stays listening comprehension. The student hears the direction; the choices are reminders of the steps, not a script to read instead of listen.
- Is it free?
- Yes. It plays free in the browser with no login. An account adds session data, goal scoring and assignment to a student.
